Tips for a Successful Job/Internship Fair
Fairs provide the opportunity to explore career fields as well as learn about organizations, jobs, and internships. Job/internship fairs provide the chance for you to connect with dozens of employers in a few hours. Remember this is not only an opportunity for you to sell yourself, but it is a chance for you to screen potential organizations.
Preparation
Resume
Have your resume updated and reviewed so that it is ready for distribution. It takes several drafts to make a resume informative, eye-catching and error free; aim for sharing with resumes@css.edu for feedback at least a week prior. Plan to bring 10-15 copies of your revised resume to the job/internship fair.
One-Minute Introduction (Elevator Pitch/Professional Introduction)
Create a one-minute introduction to use when you meet employers. This should include your name, major, college, year in school, and a few selling points about your skills and interests.
Research Organizations
Most job fairs will list the organizations planning to participate, utilize this list to create a prioritized interest list and to formulate effective and engaging questions which both demonstrate your interest and your proactive approach to finding a job/internship.
Preparing for an Interview
Some organizations will choose to interview you on the spot or very soon after the job fair, so you will want to practice your interview skills ahead of time.
Job/Internship Fair Prep Sessions
Connect with Career Services to learn about job-fair prep sessions or to schedule an individual meeting to practice and prepare.
Dress
Plan on simple and professional. Avoid any distracting items including large jewelry or overpowering cologne/perfume. Bring minimal items with you and take advantage of coat and backpack checks when offered. Visit Clothing Room, T1127, for items to keep or borrow to prepare for the fair.
Day of Strategies
Develop Your Game Plan
After arriving, take time to familiarize yourself with the layout of the fair. Consider beginning by visiting with a few organizations that are lower on your prioritized list as a way to warm up and familiarize yourself with the environment.
Keep Notes
Take a minute after each meeting to jot down some basic notes including the name of the person you talked with and the items which you discussed. Are you still interested in them or will you drop them from your list? Is there any follow-up work you need to do?
Attitude
Keep a positive attitude, and approach the event with curiosity and a sincere interest in learning. Even if you don’t find the right fit for a job/internship, narrowing down your options can help you determine the next steps. Remember to take hydration breaks to sustain your energy and focus.
Follow-up
Connect
Send thank-you emails or connect on LinkedIn with the recruiters or representatives you spoke with at the job fair for whom you had specific interest. Express your gratitude for their time and mention something specific you discussed during the conversation to help them remember you.
Next Steps
Complete any suggested steps given by the representatives, including applying to identified job openings.
